OhioMTA DISTRICT MUSIC FESTIVAL (2012)
The Ohio Music Teachers Association sponsors this event once a year.  Many teachers in the Columbus area participate, so students will have the opportunity to hear pianists from all around the district.  Recitals are held all day long in three different halls.  Participants are assigned a recital time and must arrive fifteen minutes before it begins to check in.  Students can play pieces of their own choosing, but all pieces must have been written originally as piano solos (no transcriptions).  The music is performed from memory in a concert hall on a grand piano. The audience is made up almost exclusively of the parents and siblings of the performers.  All recitals are free, and programmed to be under an hour in length.
WHAT:
During the recital, adjudicators (who are sitting on the stage) listen to the performances.  One judge writes a comment sheet for each pianist, which he/she will receive after the recital along with a certificate of participation.
The recital is followed by a mandatory (yes, I am quite sure it is mandatory) visit to nearby Graeter's Ice Cream for a reward that is even better than a sticker (if you can imagine).  I am happy to treat everyone, although sometimes I cannot physically be there with you if I have another recital to attend.  Should that happen, the ice cream fairy will take care of your treats for you.  Really.
WHERE: District Festival is held in various recital halls on the campus of Capital University in Columbus.
WHEN: Saturday, February 25th
FEES AND DEADLINE: Each entry fee is $18.00, payable to me by Friday, January 20th.
Each student MUST bring a copyrighted version of his or her music to the festival (to be used by the judge).  It must have the student’s name, performance time, and performance number clearly marked on the front cover.  The piece to be performed must be marked with a paper tab or paper clip.  The measures are to be numbered.
NOTE:
DIRECTIONS: Travel I-70 to the Livingston Avenue exit.  Turn left (west) on Livingston Avenue, then turn right (north) at the first traffic light onto Alum Creek Drive.  When Alum Creek dead ends in front of the Kroger store, turn right (east) on Main Street and go two traffic lights to College Avenue.  Turn right (south) on College.  Turn left (east) on Mound Street.  Turn right into the driveway between the blue Security house and Yochum Hall.  Park behind Security in visitor parking.  Enter Bexley Hall (on north side of Mound Street).  Go to the back of the lobby and turn right to get to the Crist Room for registration.
