NFMC FESTIVAL (2014)
WHAT: The National Federation of Music Clubs holds an annual event called a “Festival.”  For this event, pianists learn two pieces.  One of them must be from the NFMC list of approved pieces.  The other selection is of the pianist's choosing, although (for intermediate and advanced entrants) it must be by a non-American composer.  Both pieces are to be played from memory.  Students perform in a room before two adjudicators (no audience), who both fill out comment sheets and give the student a rating (‘Superior’, ‘Excellent’, etc.).
In the afternoon of the same day, there is a program acknowledging the levels achieved by students that morning.  Certificates and trophies are handed out.  This is followed by a piano recital.  The students playing on the recital are invited to play because they received superior ratings for the three previous years.  The NFMC program has a progressive system of rewards, inviting students to play on recitals at regional, state, and national level conferences if they continue to receive superior ratings for their Festival performances.  They also earn points toward trophy cups.

When Rachel realized that she had not adequately prepared for the Festival, Thomas helped her to do a little last minute practicing on the way to OSU.
